EACH one REACH one and GREET one!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

One of our most endearing qualities at HCUMC is our warm welcoming spirit. The welcome team is looking for help greeting with our Sunday services. In the coming weeks a member of our team may ask you to greet with them. Please prayerfully consider this invitation. We’d love to get you acquainted with the minor details of greeting and connect with some new friends. It’s a simple way of serving with minimal time commitments outside of worship! Weekly email reminders and sign ups allow for planned greeting or last minutes opportunities! Please email Jen Banas at jen_banas@yahoo.com if you would like to be added to the list!

Do you like the coffee that is provided for hospitality each week? Did you know that the coffee is purchased through the United Methodist Committee on Relief through the equal exchange program? If you would be interested in purchasing this coffee or other fair trade coffee through bulk ordering with other members of HCUMC please contact Amber Kujath at nurseamber@hotmail.com. For more information on this project and a list of products visit http://interfaith.equalexchange.com/

The hospitality committee is always looking for ways to help make our Sunday morning time enjoyable. Please let us know if you have any suggestions by emailing Lynda Davis at ldavis137@aol.com or Amber Kujath at nurseamber@hotmail.com.

Jan. 28 thought for reflection

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Friends in Holy Covenant,

I must confess: I fear I have become a Facebook addict. How fun it is to be in touch with new friends and friends I haven’t seen since high school graduation, to scan through the pictures of my niece’s Christmas while also RSVPing for a party and receiving folks’ input on an upcoming sermon topic, and all the while viewing the bizarre and truly wonderful “gestalt” that is the Status Update list. I love it.

Social media is surely so popular because it gives us the sense that we are more connected, that we belong to something bigger than ourselves. But this connection cannot be a true replacement for real-time community. As fun as it might be to share with your 289 friends a pithy, witty line about what you ate for lunch, this is no substitute for actually sitting down with your friends to share a meal.

Holy Covenant uses Facebook as a means to inform and organize, but the end goal is to gather us together and build community–the best way to be connected to something more than yourself. If you’re looking for a “way in,” I invite you to join a small group this season. There are a ton of diverse offerings, different days, different times. Check out the information below…there’s still time to sign up. You might even “friend” someone in a way that surpasses anything that the internet can offer.

Peace,
Pastor Trey Hall

Reading the Bible in 2009

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

We’ve resolved as a congregation to read and discuss the Bible together in 2009. That sounds obvious for a Christian congregation, right? But we want to be intentional about it this year. Each week, you are be invited to read daily ten-minute passages that over the course of the year will trail you right through the Old and New Testaments. The schedule is available as a whole by contacting office@holycovenantumc.org, or you can get particular assignments each week in the enews. And not only that, but every Sunday, between morning services, from about 10:35 to 11:10 in the sanctuary, there will be a chance to talk about what you’ve read, wrestle with the text, and see what news it yields for your life and the life of the world. If you’d like to take part, or might even be interested in helping lead the discussion, email pastortrey@holycovenantumc.org. Readings for the week are as follows (do what you can):

1-19
Luke 9:1-27 | Genesis 15 | Psalms 8

1-20
Luke 9:28-62 | Genesis 16 | Psalms 9

1-21

Jan. 21 thought for reflection

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Friends in Holy Covenant,

On Tuesday morning, I was in Nashville for a general church meeting and got the chance to watch the inauguration with over 200 folks-black, white, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, conservative, liberal, moderate-many people of faith, some not. I’m sure that not everyone in the room voted for the same person in November, but I’m also sure that everyone in the room was moved by the inauguration of Barack Obama, our country’s 44th president.

During the inauguration ceremony, I was in awe of so many things, but particularly the benediction given by the Reverend Joseph Lowery, a Civil Rights leader and United Methodist pastor. I copy it below, and add my own AMEN. I hope that, regardless of your political leanings, you’ll be able to add yours, too.

Praying for this country and all the countries of the world,
Trey Hall, Pastor, pastortrey@holycovenantumc.org

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou, who has brought us thus far along the way, thou, who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee. Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand true to thee, oh God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we’ve shared this day. We pray now, oh Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national, and indeed the global, fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hands, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations.

Our faith does not shrink though pressed by the flood of mortal ills. For we know that, Lord, you are able and you’re willing to work through faithful leadership to restore stability, mend our brokenness, heal our wounds, and deliver us from the exploitation of the poor, of the least of these, and from favoritism toward the rich, the elite of these.

We thank you for the empowering of thy servant, our 44th president, to inspire our nation to believe that yes we can work together to achieve a more perfect union.

And while we have sown the seeds of greed – the wind of greed and corruption, and even as we reap the whirlwind of social and economic disruption, we seek forgiveness and we come in a spirit of unity and solidarity to commit our support to our president by our willingness to make sacrifices, to respect your creation, to turn to each other and not on each other.

And now, Lord, in the complex arena of human relations, help us to make choices on the side of love, not hate; on the side of inclusion, not exclusion; tolerance, not intolerance. And as we leave this mountain top, help us to hold on to the spirit of fellowship and the oneness of our family. Let us take that power back to our homes, our workplaces, our churches, our temples, our mosques, or wherever we seek your will. Bless President Barack, First Lady Michelle. Look over our little angelic Sasha and Malia.

We go now to walk together as children, pledging that we won’t get weary in the difficult days ahead. We know you will not leave us alone. With your hands of power and your heart of love, help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nations shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid, when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around … when yellow will be mellow … when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.
