Our Beliefs

Holy Covenant is a part of The United Methodist Church, a theological tradition that emphasizes God's grace and love for all people, the intersection of spirituality and justice, and the calling to make a difference in the world. Our congregation is made up of people of diverse beliefs and traditions, including those who agree and disagree on a variety of church teachings. Discover more about the way we worship by looking over our Worship page.

Our Church

Holy Covenant is both place and people. A century-old building on the corner of Diversey and Wilton in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, the beautiful neo-Gothic sanctuary is radiant as the sun pours through the stained glass windows. The west side of the church also serves as the canvas for a large public mural, "For A New World." Within Holy Covenant's walls, you'll also find a beautiful people, diverse in experiences and beliefs. Our history -- both place and people -- tells the story of a congregation with a rich legacy of justice and love from the past to the present.

Our People

Our membership is approximately 100 people, though many people who participate in our common life are not members. From every path -- straight and narrow to wildly winding -- you will find a kind and passionate congregation comprised of students, young professionals, retirees, artists and social workers, homeless folks and empty nesters, families with children, gay and straight couples, and singles. We range in age from infant to 80, with a median age of 30.

The seekers, skeptics, and hopers who compose our community are engaged and honest -- not stodgy or dogmatic. Many of us were not raised in the United Methodist tradition; in fact, many of us did not grow up in a church at all. We are open to mystery, to our lives being shaken with the love and new life of God.

Community

Holy Covenant is not just about its parishioners. We practice our faith in our neighborhood through a range of services, such as offering food and hospitality to homeless youth on the streets of Lakeview and pushing aside the chairs in our sanctuary every Tuesday night to transform it into Dignity Diner, a restaurant-style meal for the homeless and hungry . For more information on how our people contribute to our community, see our Justice and Action page.

At Holy Covenant there is room for all God’s people, and we hope that you’ll feel welcome to join us to find a community of belonging, deepen your spirituality and faith, and reach out beyond yourself to create change in the Church and world. Join us on Sundays at 9:30 or 11:15 a.m. for our service of worship and coffee hour or on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm for Dignity Diner.

History

Our church and our congregation have a rich and varied history. From our buildingís beginning in 1894, through the Civil Rights and Women's Equality movements in the 1960's through to the present day, Holy Covenant has been an active participant -- and a leader.
