Feb. 9 Reflection: Practicing Forgiveness

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Hello, friends,

We’re doing something new this winter. Have you noticed? The small group sign-ups have a lot of the same group, meeting on different nights around the city: it’s that Forgiveness group. Instead of having many different conversations, we’re having one large conversation as a church about a central Christian belief and practice. You could argue that forgiveness is the central belief and practice. So what’s it matter to you?

Forgiveness is for all of us. It’s been given to us and we’re called to practice it. But how? “Should I forgive him?” “Did she ever really forgive me?” “Can I forgive myself?” “What does it add up to that God forgives me?” Come engage with the rubber-meets-the-road questions of our faith.

One thing that’s not new: these groups are still a great chance to get to know other folks from church in a casual setting. And they’re still an important opportunity to grow closer to God. Groups start next week (although the Monday night group now starts on Feb. 21st) and you can see an overview of the whole curriculum on our blog. Get your juices flowing by listening to the sermon on forgiveness from Jan 23rd or Georgette Kelly’s testimony about being part of a forgiveness small group and then join the conversation.

This winter, try something new. It’ll be hard…and it could change your life.

In peace,

Rebecca Anderson
Minister of Spiritual Formation

Jan. 23 Testimony: Georgette Kelly

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Testimony, January 23, 2011
By Georgette Kelly

I don’t mean to brag. But I am really good at forgiveness. I like to think it’s my background in theatre and storytelling—I have had specific training in imagining characters, walking in their footsteps, understanding the forces that cause them to hurt other people. I like to think that with enough insight, and enough time, I could forgive anyone for anything.

For example: If I love you for years, and put your needs before mine, and support you through the most difficult times of your life… And then you break my heart with no explanation? I’ll be angry. And I’ll be hurt. But just tell me where you’re coming from, and give me a year or two—I’ll forgive you.

If you look me straight in the eye, knowing that I am a queer Christian, and tell me that gay people are going to hell? I’ll need a good rant, and a good cry, and a lot of distance. It won’t be easy, and I might not even like it. But just hint about who has excluded you in the past, who instilled this judgment in you, and give me enough time—I’ll forgive you.

I have the forgiveness routine down pat. So, this fall, when Rebecca Anderson asked if I’d be willing to lead storytelling workshops about forgiveness in small groups, I thought it was a perfect fit. (more…)

Jan. 19 Reflection: What is Forgiveness?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Hello, friends,

This Sunday, we’re starting a conversation about forgiveness. We already talk about forgiveness all the time. Each week we pray, asking God to “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” We know that as Christians we are forgiven and that we are to forgive. But what does forgiveness actually mean?

  • Is it possible to forgive someone who hasn’t asked forgiveness?
  • Is it possible to forgive someone with whom you no longer have a relationship, or who has passed away?
  • Is it possible, or even Christian, to forgive a wrong that is ongoing?

I’ve got good news and bad news for you: the services on Sunday won’t answer these questions. Instead, we’ll be gearing up to continue the conversation, in winter small groups. For 6 weeks, beginning on February 14th, we’ll focus on what forgiveness is, how it functions, and our call to it as a forgiven people.

This Sunday, come join the conversation. And come ready to be changed by it.

In peace,

Rebecca Anderson
Minister of Spiritual Formation

Forgiveness

Registration is now closed for the forgiveness groups
Is there someone in your life who, after all these years, you’ve never been able to forgive? Is there someone who extended forgiveness to you and you felt unable to receive it? Do you feel forgiven by God? How do we experience forgiveness in our day-to-day? With movies, radio, Scripture, and our own stories, we’ll examine this central Christian belief and its role in our lives.

There are many opportunities to join a Forgiveness Group so that as many as possible can participate. When we talk with one another as the body of Christ, we’ll have this framework and vocabulary in common. This group will be a chance to build our skills and capacity for conversations that can be hard to have, both in our personal lives and as a church.

WEEK 1 – The Power of Forgiveness
This introductory week will be a chance to get to know one another, and to get some ideas about forgiveness on the table. We’ll be watching The Power of Forgiveness, a movie that tells about the story of the Amish community’s response to the tragedy in Nickel Mines, PA. Pastors, psychologists, and thinkers and religious people as diverse as Elie Wiesel and Thich Nhat Hanh share their understandings of forgiveness.

WEEK 2 – What do we (think we) know about forgiveness?
“I know what ‘forgiveness’ means – until I try to define it!” A conversation about what we know, where we learned it, and whether that matches our own experiences.

WEEK 3 – Receiving Forgiveness
We’ll examine two stories of people ready to receive forgiveness, one Biblical, one from This American Life.

WEEK 4 – Confession and Repentance
Still thinking of our stories from last week, we’ll consider the role and importance of confession and repentance in forgiveness.

WEEK 5 – Restorative Justice
We’ll examine this model of justice that focuses on repairing the harm caused by wrong-doing (criminal or not) with the goal of reconciliation. Through case studies, we’ll build our own capacity for using this model in our relationships both in and out of church.

WEEK 6 – Personal Forgiveness Timeline
We’ll think, share, and pray about our own experiences of and need for forgiveness. Group members are invited to tell one story from their own lives – a story that each is comfortable offering to the group.

Film and Forgiveness

Sundays, Feb 6, 20; Mar 20
1 – 3:30 pm, at Holy Covenant
Led by Art and Julie Holmberg
Many of us love movies for the entertainment and escape that they offer. However, this small group will be approaching film from a different perspective. We will watch a recent film together and then pause to how the movie “spoke” to us; what spiritual aspects might the film awaken. Reflecting on forgiveness, we will discuss the “teachers and lessons” that help us to see God in the everyday lives of ourselves and others. Please join us to watch, share or just listen! This group will watch movies as a way of opening conversation about our faith journeys. The group will meet four times for 2.5 to 3 hours to allow time for screening and conversation.

Dear Holy Covenant Family,

As I write, snowflakes dance gently outside my window. What a fitting way to begin December! As the winter begins in earnest, so too does the Christian New Year. On Sunday we celebrated the beginning of Advent, the season when we prepare for the coming of Christ. It also marks the start of a new year in our Christian calendar. Good news! We don’t have to wait until January to start anew-NOW is the time to prepare ourselves for new life and expect Jesus to change everything. How can we prepare through Holy Covenant? So many ways-see the sidebar for all our services and events. Here’s what’s coming up in the next week:

2nd Story at Holy Covenant

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Join us on Sunday evening, November 14th to hear Adam Belcuore’s astonishing story about transubstantiation, among other things. Bring a friend, and plan to stay for homemade pumpkin pie and conversation. Please note: Adam’s funny, challenging, and thought-provoking story is not appropriate for young children.

Adam comes to us from Chicago’s 2nd Story, a hybrid performance event combining storytelling, wine, and music. The idea is that if 2nd Story does their job right, you’ll leave telling your own stories.

If you’d like more information about 2nd Story’s storytelling events, please visit them at www.2ndStory.com

On Monday, November 15, join other HC-ers at Webster’s Wine Bar for 2nd Story’s monthly story-telling event. A typical 2nd Story evening goes something like this: you hang out with your friends and eat and drink and make merry. Three to five times during the night, the lights go down, a spotlight comes up on somebody and they tell you a story. Get your own ticket (and more information) at www.2ndStory.com or bring $12 to the 7 pm service on Nov 1.

Sept. 29 Reflection: Joyfully Raise Our Voices

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

bono elevation 300x225 Sept. 29 Reflection: Joyfully Raise Our VoicesDear Holy Covenant Family,

Hear these words from the U2 song Magnificent:

I was born, I was born to sing for you, I didn’t have a choice but to lift you up and sing whatever song you wanted me to, I give you back my voice, From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise.

On Sunday morning, we will be giving God our voices, voices that God first gave us, by joyfully singing the songs of U2. As the lyrics wash over our hearts, the melodies pour forth from our mouths, and the rhythms permeate our hands and feet, we will be worshiping with our whole bodies. We’ll receive the bread and the cup, the ancient practice of taking our faith inside of us, of feeding our souls with the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.

And, of course, we will rock.

As we sing and dance we will be transformed. Transformed not just by the music, but by the God who creates us to sing and to worship. May we be mindful in our transformation that we are called to transform others. As we worship with our bodies, may we go out into the world working to make sure that all bodies know they are loved. That all bodies are treated equally, no matter their country or religion or gender or sexual orientation; that all bodies have enough to eat, access to education and shelter and healthcare and a sustainable environment. At the core of our faith is the call to care for all of God’s children, especially those who are without.

Bono, as a man of faith, answers God’s call and inspires others to do the same through his music and his work. U2 calls on us to help end poverty by supporting the United Nation’s Millennium Goals to end poverty, which are: end hunger; universal access to education; gender equality; child health; maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS; environmental sustainability; and global partnership. You can read more about the goals and how you can be involved here: www.endpoverty2015.org. You can also learn how to be involved with the One Campaign, which Bono founded, to help end extreme poverty in Africa: www.one.org. We’ll be taking up a special communion offering for Water for Life, a United Methodist related organization that provides clean water in Liberia.

Join us on Sunday at 9:30 and 11:15 and invite someone to come with you. Come early and make your way to the front seats so that we provide hospitality to our many visitors. Together, we’ll sing and shout, be inspired by the ancient words of Scripture and the modern words of Bono. We’ll remember where we came from and answer the call to make the world a better place. We’ll be transformed, mind, body and soul, and go out transforming the world as we joyfully raise our voices in all we do.

Rock on,
Kate

I Love to Tell the Story: Learn God’s Story

Join a small group at Holy Covenant this fall to learn the stories that change lives and changed history. Connect with God and others as we tap into God’s story, share our own experiences of faith, and are strengthened to tell the stories of God’s presence in our lives to others.

Some people at HC are asking: How do I read the Bible? What are some ways I can pray? How can I include spiritual practices in my everyday life? How can I invite others to church? Small groups won’t answer all your questions but learning God’s story is a good place to start.
